Well… I suppose it had to happen eventually.  That damn book on happiness has outed San Luis Obispo, California big time.  We were on Oprah a couple of days ago. Jenny McCarthy interviewed a bunch of people… and toured around the city and general environs….  talking in that kinda goofy odd “Crest toothpaste spokesmodel” way she has.

I know EVERY SINGLE person interviewed in this segment!   I suppose that it is these social connections that make you feel good about a place.  You can go anywhere and find a conversation almost anytime you like.

Of late I am starting to see more saccharine smiles on tourists around town… Very Stepford wifey.  Wandering around… looking up a lot… as though this were New York maybe… or perhaps like animals that have just been let of of the cage… in a kind of happiness stupor.

The wine and  cheeze places are no doubt doing bang up business… and it is hell to rent a bike I bet.  Oprah Effect they call it.

Here’s kind of a cool overview of SLO and the surrounding area  (a “tilt shift” video)… for some reason a shot of Morro Bay is the first image though!

So… I was standing on the pedals of my bike while on the sidewalk… leaning against the back wall of the Mission San Luis Obispo… waiting for my botany professor buddy Matt Ritter…to take a picture of a street tree for his new book about the trees of California… and this extra few inches of height offered me a view of something I doubt I ever would have known about otherwise.  I was able to look over the 6′ 6″ wall toward the the exit door behind the Pulpit… and next to where the nuns live… and what do I see????  A Jacuzzi!    That’s it there with the Turquoise cover on it!

Hmmm.   Hot Tubs aren’t what I normally associate with the Church.  Actually though… I think I like the church better now!

Below is better view of the wall I was peaking over… on Palm St. just west of Chorro.

SLO is mentioned along with Denmark, Singapore, and Nuevo Leon in Mexico as one of the happiest places on the planet.

scrubby and lloyds

my buddy Bill Mulder sent me this photo of the old Scrubby and Lloyds hamburger joint here in SLO… long closed and torn down.  It is raining today… and blustery… It sure would be fun to be able to go back to this place today… and sit at the big U shaped dinette bar… where everyone faces each other around the waitresses domain of milk shake mixers and potato chip bags on wire clip clamp racks.   Usually a couple of old timers chatting at a booth around the edge… and a plethora of car mechanics and downtown business owners and the odd newspaper reporter hanging out.    Phone booth out front… remember those… jeez… remember dimes for that matter.   The cook… not sure if it was Scrubby… or Lloyd… usually gruff and unshaven in the back… ex navy maybe… I dunno.  Big flat hamburgers.. No fries… only potato chips.  a coke… or a milkshake.  That was the sum total of the menu.
