beauty is in the details…

detail of really crazy gutter spout I found in Zermatt, Switzerland… over the top… but done of simple materials.  It makes the whole building.

When in Stuttgart…

early Mercedes race car. I love the details… so subtle… at the Mercedes Benz Museum.  Don’t miss this place if you are nearby.  I spent about 4 hours there happily!

Edit… Jan 2010… I was up in Santa Cruz… Capitola to be exact… and met by accident the nephew of the fellow that drove this car when it was racing!  He runs a great sandwich shop there and has a picture of this car on the wall with his uncle driving.

vanilla bikes are some of the finest handbuilt bikes on the planet.  I wish I knew the story on the Trike. Probably built for the owners kid I would bet.

5. buy it asshole

You have to read the fine print under the shoe.

It’s circa 1993 or so… Rolling Stone magazine.

We wrote  over 500 different ads between 1991 and 1996… crazy.

2. sandboarding

I kinda wish I still had those socks. From the “Extra” page in the back of Action Now magazine… in the early action sports years.

my 18 year old sneakers

7. old school sneaker

As you can see… I have spent a lot of time in these.  I have a particularly close relationship with them actually.  They have been very good to me.  this is the first pair of size 11’s made… they are 18 years old now.  They squeak like tortured weasels when you skirp them on the floor.  Something to do with the rubber compound… heh heh.   I am nothing but thankful for all this.

swine flu is here…

pooflu

I know this one has been around the world already… but it is still funny.

Lotusland in Montecito

P1010026

A few weeks ago Matt Ritter, a biology professor buddy from Cal Poly, took us on a guided tour of Lotusland.  This place is in Montecito (Santa Barbara, CA) and was built by Gana Walska… a rather famous dancer from the early part of the 1920’s.  It is an amazing botanical wonder!

scrubby and lloyds

my buddy Bill Mulder sent me this photo of the old Scrubby and Lloyds hamburger joint here in SLO… long closed and torn down.  It is raining today… and blustery… It sure would be fun to be able to go back to this place today… and sit at the big U shaped dinette bar… where everyone faces each other around the waitresses domain of milk shake mixers and potato chip bags on wire clip clamp racks.   Usually a couple of old timers chatting at a booth around the edge… and a plethora of car mechanics and downtown business owners and the odd newspaper reporter hanging out.    Phone booth out front… remember those… jeez… remember dimes for that matter.   The cook… not sure if it was Scrubby… or Lloyd… usually gruff and unshaven in the back… ex navy maybe… I dunno.  Big flat hamburgers.. No fries… only potato chips.  a coke… or a milkshake.  That was the sum total of the menu.
